GIS Day 2025

For more than ten years, we have been organizing the “Measure and Show It” competition on the occasion of the Day of Geoinformatics—better known worldwide as GIS Day. This year, we welcomed a record number of participants: 23 individual contestants and 9 teams. As usual, the first part of the event featured the teams’ presentations.

The Varga Márton Horticultural and Surveying Technical School and Dormitory arrived with three teams.

  • The Joker team designed a metro line connecting Budapest with Liszt Ferenc International Airport.
  • The Vizipók team worked on surveying and creating a 3D visualization of an artificial lake located in Bátya.
  • The Bányamérnökök (“Mining Engineers”) team presented the laser-based survey and data processing of the Fagyosasszony mine system.

Students from the Székesfehérvár Vocational Training Center Jáky József Technical School participated with two teams, each presenting projects related to urban well-being.

  • Team 11/B examined the possibilities of establishing community gardens using geoinformatics methods.
  • Team 13/B designed a 3D model of a recreational park named Mozgásliget on an underutilized plot behind the Interspar store in Székesfehérvár.

The team from the Békéscsaba Vocational Training Center Vásárhelyi Pál Technical School and Dormitory created a photogrammetric model of the statue located in front of their institution.

From the Baranya County Vocational Training Center Pollack Mihály Technical School and Dormitory,

  • the Pincebogarak (“Cellar Bugs”) team surveyed a cellar located in the school courtyard using SLAM technology, while
  • the Tablokátorok (“Table-lockers”) team photographed all the class boards in their school and created a web-based database where the boards can be searched and displayed by location, academic year, and class name.

A noteworthy aspect of this year’s projects was that several teams made use of the opportunities offered by Artificial Intelligence. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated teachers who prepared the students: Annamária Kimlei, Attila Cifer, Zoltán Hajtman, Gergő Kelemen, Norbert Réti, and László Tamás.

Following the student presentations, company representatives and jury members — Judit Kirisics (NNG Ltd.), József Vízhányó (GDi Magyarország Ltd.), and Tamás Sáfár (Leica Geosystems Hungary) — spoke about the latest developments of their companies, the market role of geoinformatics and surveying, and the potential directions for future innovation.

Next came the award ceremony. The jury faced a difficult task, as most teams presented high-quality, professionally well-constructed projects. We encourage students to continue developing their ideas so they can participate in the TDK Scientific Student Conference announced for secondary school students in the spring.

  • 1st place: Pincebogarak
  • 2nd place: Bányamérnökök
  • 3rd place: Tablokátorok

We wish every student continued success in their future work.

Happy GIS DAY!

4th Harman Hackathon

Following the preliminaries, 14 teams were invited to the finals of the 4th “Junior Engineers Camp – HARMAN Hackathon,” an idea and prototype development competition jointly organized for the fourth time by Harman Becker Ltd., the Alba Regia Technical Faculty of Obuda University, and the Municipality of Székesfehérvár. The teams arrived in Székesfehérvár for the 24-hour development challenge from Szeged, Pécs, Budapest, Dunaújváros, Veszprém, and Kecskemét.

In the finals, the participating teams were tasked with creating a prototype of an innovative technological solution that contributes to sustainable, safe, and enjoyable urban transportation in the year 2055, at the level of a mid-sized European city. They had to take into account the growth of urban populations, the transformation of energy resources, environmental awareness, and autonomous systems as part of everyday life.

The hackathon began with a warm-up mini concert by students of the Székesfehérvár Vocational Training Center Széchenyi István Technical School, followed by a performance by illusionist Balázs V. Kiss. At the opening ceremony, Deputy Mayor Attila Mészáros, Csaba István Purgel, Managing Director of Harman Becker Ltd., and Prof. Dr. György Györök, Dean of the Alba Regia Technical Faculty of Obuda University, welcomed the teams.

The first place was awarded to the Mikrobi team, composed of students from the Székesfehérvár Vocational Training Center Széchenyi István Technical School. Team members Ádám Krausz, Péter Ottó Lopert, Márk Bokor, and Kevin Kertai developed “a self-driving car project designed to enable environmentally conscious, economical, and sustainable transportation in a future city—creating the perfect traffic system.”

Results of the Higher Education Category

The winner in the university category was Palotai MotorSOKK, consisting of members Sándor Borz from the University of Pannonia, Dominik Vaczula from Obuda University’s Alba Regia Faculty, and Krisztián Major from the Székesfehérvár Vocational Training Center Széchenyi István Technical School. Their project presented a model of a communicative intersection connected to a self-developed application that recommends optimal speed and route options for faster, shorter, and safer travel.

After the pitches and the award ceremony, each team received Harman Dollars according to their ranking, which they could exchange for premium-quality audio devices.

We trust that participants enriched themselves with numerous experiences, new knowledge, and inspiring professional connections through this informal learning environment, and that many of them will choose a future career along the STEAM pathways.
