For more than ten years, we have been organizing the “Measure and Show It” competition on the occasion of the Day of Geoinformatics—better known worldwide as GIS Day. This year, we welcomed a record number of participants: 23 individual contestants and 9 teams. As usual, the first part of the event featured the teams’ presentations.
The Varga Márton Horticultural and Surveying Technical School and Dormitory arrived with three teams.
- The Joker team designed a metro line connecting Budapest with Liszt Ferenc International Airport.
- The Vizipók team worked on surveying and creating a 3D visualization of an artificial lake located in Bátya.
- The Bányamérnökök (“Mining Engineers”) team presented the laser-based survey and data processing of the Fagyosasszony mine system.
Students from the Székesfehérvár Vocational Training Center Jáky József Technical School participated with two teams, each presenting projects related to urban well-being.
- Team 11/B examined the possibilities of establishing community gardens using geoinformatics methods.
- Team 13/B designed a 3D model of a recreational park named Mozgásliget on an underutilized plot behind the Interspar store in Székesfehérvár.
The team from the Békéscsaba Vocational Training Center Vásárhelyi Pál Technical School and Dormitory created a photogrammetric model of the statue located in front of their institution.
From the Baranya County Vocational Training Center Pollack Mihály Technical School and Dormitory,
- the Pincebogarak (“Cellar Bugs”) team surveyed a cellar located in the school courtyard using SLAM technology, while
- the Tablokátorok (“Table-lockers”) team photographed all the class boards in their school and created a web-based database where the boards can be searched and displayed by location, academic year, and class name.
A noteworthy aspect of this year’s projects was that several teams made use of the opportunities offered by Artificial Intelligence. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated teachers who prepared the students: Annamária Kimlei, Attila Cifer, Zoltán Hajtman, Gergő Kelemen, Norbert Réti, and László Tamás.
Following the student presentations, company representatives and jury members — Judit Kirisics (NNG Ltd.), József Vízhányó (GDi Magyarország Ltd.), and Tamás Sáfár (Leica Geosystems Hungary) — spoke about the latest developments of their companies, the market role of geoinformatics and surveying, and the potential directions for future innovation.
Next came the award ceremony. The jury faced a difficult task, as most teams presented high-quality, professionally well-constructed projects. We encourage students to continue developing their ideas so they can participate in the TDK Scientific Student Conference announced for secondary school students in the spring.
- 1st place: Pincebogarak
- 2nd place: Bányamérnökök
- 3rd place: Tablokátorok
We wish every student continued success in their future work.
Happy GIS DAY!
