PHARE – Introduction to OpenGIS (UNIPHORM, 1998)

Aims:

The project addressed the problem with the provision of a web-based distance learning service for the open GIS environment aimed at technical staff. The main characteristics of the project were:

  • a web based service for delivery of materials, interactive use of GIS, student support and interaction, dissemination of best practice
    and a forum for students, academics, vendors and the business and commerical sectors which complements the OGIS forum
  • an underlying generic, modular curriculum which is platform and software independent
  • work with EU base data, conformance with EU data standards and links to established EU projects
  • on-line presentation and support based on latest web technology
  • a system of credit rating and transfer
  • a continuous professional development programme and award multi-lingual presentation and support.

Outcomes:

The multimedia distance education course aiming knowledge and practical skills on OpenGIS. The course length is 8 weeks with an equivalent of 80-hour distance learning followed by a 5-day training. The students are supported with a web site at http://www.geo.info.hu/uniphorm/
